Call for Art: Visible / Invisible. How silence is a tool of violence allowing it to blossom and grow.While violence has become endemic to our lives, globally, nationally and in our neighborhoods, the invisible aspects and causes of violence remain hidden, existing under the surface and in many cases being more devastating than the original violent actions.The theme of invisible violence is not new as can be seen from the increased incidents of emotional and mental abuse and the socio-economic legacy that is all around us. Visible / Invisible explores this so-called invisible violence as it manifests itself in everyday life, in our homes, schools, workspaces and media.

THE EXHIBITION

Visible / Invisible will bring together artists’ voices and viewpoints to investigate the roots of this subversive invisible violence tracing its historical and cultural origins through language, identity related issues, representation, fluctuating socio-economic conditions and long held beliefs.

Visible / Invisible seeks multi-disciplinary work that explores and considers the different forms of violence across a broad spectrum of experience, especially works that address those forms that do not get public attention and thus remain invisible.

Some questions to consider: Has popular culture provided a structure that has contributed to the lack of attention and resources to fight invisible violence? Has silence become a tool of violence allowing it to blossom further and grow?

Show runs in the galleries of the Noyes Cultural Center, Evanston, February  4 – March 18, 2022

  • JPEG’s due by January 4, 2022
  • Notification of acceptance by January 11, 2022

SPECIFICATIONS AND GUIDELINES. 

This call is open to artists in the Evanston and Chicago areas. All fine art media (2D and 3D work) will be considered except film or video. No changes or substitutions allowed. If accepted, artists must deliver and pick up work according to show deadlines.

TO APPLY:

1.     You may enter up to three pieces with one additional view each. Send JPEG images with subject Visible/Invisible to visibleinvisible2022@gmail.com

2.     Name your JPG files – Artist’s last name – Title.  Example: Smith- title1

– Submit JPG images sized approximately 4” x 6” at 300 dpi resolution.  Images must be at least 1200 pixels wide.  High resolution images are requested for print publicity of accepted works.

– Provide dimensions of each piece as follows:  Height x Width x Depth.  Indicate whether inches or feet.

– An image identification sheet with title, media, year completed and brief statement as to how this relates to the Visible/Invisible theme.

– Artist Information: Name, Address, Phone Number, email

3.     Provide an artist statement about the work(s) you are submitting and its relevance to the concept of “Visible Invisible”.  Description is limited to 200 words maximum.  Write your statement before you submit online and check the character count.

ARTWORK SPECIFICATIONS: 

• Work must have been created in the last three years.

• Work must be available for the duration of the exhibit.

• Artists must submit detailed descriptions of any wall-hung artworks with alternative hanging methods, showing in detail how these pieces will hang.

• Size limit for 2-D work: not to exceed 48” in one direction;

• 3D work- The only pedestals available are 14” x 14”. if your sculpture has specific dimensions required for display, please consider bringing your own. The artist must install artwork requiring complex installation (to be determined by the curator and Cultural Center.).

• Wall-hung work must be suitably framed. All framed artworks must be firmly wired for hanging – no clip frames or saw-tooth hangers. Work without an appropriate hanging apparatus will be disqualified.

• Entries that do not comply with the rules will be disqualified.

Artists agree to allow reproduction of their digital files and/or photographs taken of their art for educational, publicity, and archival purposes.
