Call for Signage for The Wild Mile Floating Eco-Park

The Wild Mile is an innovative floating eco-park located along the North Branch Canal of the Chicago River. As part of our continued efforts to create a vibrant, accessible space for both people and wildlife, we are inviting artists to design and install unique signage up on street-level that reflects the natural beauty and biodiversity of this urban oasis (exact location near park entrance flexible).

Artists are encouraged to incorporate the name “Wild Mile” into their designs while highlighting native plants and wildlife that have thrived due to the park’s restoration. This is a paid opportunity for artists to showcase their creativity through any medium, including murals, mosaics, or metalwork. Budget ranges but maxes out at $10,000. Designs should enhance the experience of visitors, connecting them with the park’s unique ecosystem.

Submission Requirements:

Artists are asked to submit a portfolio or up to three examples of previous work that demonstrate their aesthetic, technical skill, and ability to conceptualize public art; with the following considerations for selection:

  • Relevance to the theme of nature and wildlife in an urban setting
  • Creative use of design and medium to engage and inform park visitors

Design Guidelines:

  • Integration of the “Wild Mile” name within the work, without overt branding or commercial elements.
  • No political, racial, or social commentary that could be deemed offensive or controversial.
  • Projects must avoid promoting corporate or personal brands as the focal point of the piece.

The selected artist(s) will collaborate with Urban Rivers to ensure the design meets the aesthetic and educational goals of the project.

Timeline and Submission:

Portfolios or past work should be submitted via email to maya@urbanriv.org no later than 5:00 p.m. on Friday, November 15, 2024.
