In her solo exhibition, Ellen Holtzblatt’s paintings explore the relationship between the physical and the spiritual, seeking an empathic understanding of self and other. Landscape, such as the Midwestern prairie or the Scottish islands, becomes an allegory for psychological states, emotion, evolution and decay. Through figures and landscapes, Holtzblatt explores the power and vulnerability of mind, soul, and the passage of time.

The Inside/Out Exhibition explores the concept of the window as metaphor. Windows, whether open or closed, represent dualities: such as freedom vs. constraint, order vs. chaos, and possibility vs. limitation. The window metaphor sets up narrative elements that address boundaries, both self-imposed and psychological.
