Julie Sulzen Exhibition at Lillstreet Art Center

4401 N. Ravenswood Ave.
Chicago

Thru February 3

Julie Sulzen is an artist whose work focuses primarily on painting the landscapes of the American Midwest. She also explores drawing, printmaking, watercolor, and photography in both figurative and landscape themes.

“Painting contemporary landscapes and settings (both public and intimate) using traditional painting methods of oil on canvas, I aim to connect multiple socio-economic backgrounds in the ever-evolving urban location known as Chicago. I communicate using images of homes, neighborhoods, parks, and the built environment, to bring understanding of the emotional and aesthetic ties people have to their surroundings; especially when those surroundings are in flux. Through my art, as a wife, mother, painter, and lifelong Chicago resident, I ask questions about my own gendered and class-status relationships within my community to help tell the specific stories of my experiences and relationships with urban environments like Chicago.”
